ABOUT THIS CLOSE

Bakehouse Close discover

Historic Canongate close featuring Acheson House and the Outlander filming location for Jamie Fraser’s fictional print shop.

Bakehouse Close owes its name to the Incorporation of Bakers of the Canongate, who owned land on its west side. The narrow alley preserves the Old Town’s close-knit layout; nearby Acheson House, dating from 1633, completes this picture of early modern domestic life. Its recent fame is thanks to Outlander: it served as the fictional print shop of Alexander Malcolm, where Jamie and Claire are reunited. This is a confirmed filming location, not historical evidence of a real print shop by that name.

For visitors, the charm lies in stepping from the open Canongate into a tightly framed historic alleyway. If you know the series, you can compare the filming location with the real cityscape; even without knowing it, the old facades and the connection to the neighbouring Museum of Edinburgh make it well worth a visit. A brief, attentive stroll is a much better fit than expecting an elaborate film set: there is no publicly accessible Outlander print shop on site.
