Dunbar’s Close

Historically inspired pocket garden just off the Canongate.
Dunbar’s Close Garden is not an unaltered survivor from the 17th century. In the 1970s, the Mushroom Trust commissioned landscape architect Seamus Filor to design it in the style of town gardens of that era, donating it to the City of Edinburgh in 1978. While earlier garden uses are recorded, there is no verified original knot garden plan on this site.
Behind its discreet entrance lies a walled garden with hedges, flowerbeds, and seating. Its formal layout offers a serene contrast to the bustling Royal Mile. This small urban oasis is ideal for a quiet break; according to the Mushroom Trust, admission is free. Current access depends on the notices posted at the gate.
