ABOUT THIS CLOSE

Old Fishmarket Close discover

Steep Old Town close between High Street and Cowgate with a documented history of fish trade and archaeological traces beneath the street surface.

Old Fishmarket Close preserves the memory of the fish trade in the densely built-up city center. Records mention a fish market in council minutes from 1539 and the close itself in 1592. Today's streetscape combines sections of two older closes, between which the market was located. Historical names can therefore not always be clearly assigned to a specific modern section.

Historic evidence also lies beneath the street pavement. During utility work in 2002, a previously undocumented cellar was uncovered; its dating remained open. Material observed next to it included pottery from the 15th to 17th centuries, animal bones, and oyster shells. While these finds prove earlier use, they do not allow a definitive dating of every surviving architectural feature.
