Wardrop’s Close / Wardrop’s Court discover
Dragons framing the Lawnmarket pend and a listed group of buildings from Patrick Geddes' era of urban renewal.
Wardrop’s Court belongs to a group of buildings designed by Stewart Henbest Capper in 1892, which incorporates older structures. The colorful dragon brackets at the pend are a distinctive detail. The listed building records also describe projecting oriels, sculpted corbels featuring allegories of art, science, and craft, as well as a terracotta balustrade.
Today's courtyard was created through the redevelopment of denser, older buildings in the 1890s and is linked to Patrick Geddes’ urban renewal efforts. Heritage records describe the courtyard and its architecture, but do not establish a general public right of access to the adjoining communal gardens. A visit to the garden is therefore not guaranteed as freely accessible.
