Expansive fortress ruins set on a coastal cliff surrounded on three sides by the North Sea.
Dunnottar is perched on a coastal cliff about 49 meters high south of Stonehaven. The former fortress of the Earls Marischal combines ruined architecture with an exposed North Sea location.
The castle played a role in the 1650s in protecting the Scottish Crown Jewels from Cromwell's army. Access, steps, and possible weather-related closures should be considered when planning your visit.
